Overview
For the IRS to garnish your wages, the IRS must issue you a notice of intention to levy. The IRS must wait 30 days after it issues the notice of levy before it can serve a levy on your salary and wages. Unlike other levies, an IRS levy on your salary and wages is continuous. That means that once issued, it continues until your tax debt is satisfied, time barred, the release will facilitate collection, or the levy will create an economic hardship. The IRS can only seize 15% of the non-exempt amount that the employer pays.

Problems
An IRS wage garnishment can affect your reputation at work and be devastating to your quality of life. With the current state of the economy, any reduction in salary can cause a person’s other bills—mortgage, rent, car loans, and credit cards, for example—to go unpaid leading to financial problems.
